Dendrochronology

Dendrochronology is the science of tree ring dating and is used to establish the exact year that a timber framed building was constructed. Discreet pencil-like cores are removed from in-situ timbers and then the chronological and environmental information stored within the sample, is used to establish the date of construction. Before AD 1600, most timber frame buildings in England were made from oak  and from the 1620’s, an increasing amount were constructed from imported pine. Both have great potential to be dated and, provided there is tree ring series of more than 50 rings, it is possible to match them to the master chronologie,  establishing a precise calendar date. This information can then be used as part of  wider research of buildings within your heritage story.
